Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup hot water
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
6. Divide the batter in half.
7. In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder and hot water until smooth.
8. Stir the cocoa mixture into one half of the batter.
9. Drop spoonfuls of the vanilla and chocolate batters alternately into the prepared pan.
10. Use a knife or skewer to swirl the batters together.
11. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
12. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For a richer chocolate flavor, use high-quality cocoa powder. You can add citrus zest or extracts for different flavor variations. To make cupcakes, adjust baking time.
